You don’t have to train for a marathon or work from home to know that staying motivated and on track to accomplish goals is hard.
Our culture has developed a very short attention span. There is a constant variety delivered by a thousand cable channels and the 24-hour news cycle.
However, humans crave novelty. Let’s say you’re slogging along on the same old running route five days a week. It’s only natural that your motivation would begin to wane.
It’s easy in the beginning, what with your passions inflamed, so to speak. Over time, however, the novelty wears off.
Once the fun and excitement of the honeymoon are over and you have to get down to the real work.
Your attention will wander to new interests and pursuits. In other words, your goals can become a chore.
The good news is that you’re not alone. Plenty of people have trouble maintaining motivation. There are many ways to combat a loss of interest, renew your motivation, and stick to the plan.
Here are just a few helpful hints to keep you motivated.
1. Make a Game Plan
To maintain your motivation to succeed in your endeavors, you can’t wander blindly through the forest of life.
You need to choose a path. You must stick to it in order to get from point A to point B expediently.
A good way to begin is by setting a goal and working backward. Suppose you sign up for a 5K race in three months.
By working backward, you should be able to set milestones. They, in turn, will help you reach your ideal fitness level in time to kick butt and cross the finish line.
Say your goal is to hit 10,000 monthly unique visitors on your website by the end of the year. You can create a strategy of outreach, SEO and social media.
That is in addition to advertising campaigns, and more. These are all aimed at delivering your target numbers by your deadline.
Of course, it pays to be flexible, especially if it’s your first time trying to reach such a goal. Set smaller goals, or milestones along the way to your overarching goal.
Then, you have the opportunity to learn along the way. You can tweak your plan as needed to stay on track and succeed.
2. Have a Plan B
No offense to Hamlet and his musings. There’s nothing noble about suffering the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune.
However, they can be avoided with a little forethought and planning. You have to work toward success. Though, you have to plan for setbacks and failures along the way.
This will help you to put contingency plans in place. They will ensure a speedy recovery when common road blocks pop up.
Suppose you’re unable to get a traditional bank loan to launch your business venture. Are you going to give up? No.
It’s time to look into small business loans, angel investors, silent partners, and even self-directed IRAs. A plan B will help you to minimize downtime and the drain it can cause to your motivation.
3. Set (and stick to) a Schedule
Getting into a routine is one of the best ways to continue making progress toward goals when motivation wanes. Scheduling can help you to get organized.
In doing so, you’ll break your goals into small, bite-size chunks. This can also keep you on track. You’ll be accountable when your enthusiasm for your project begins to diminish.
Some people work well under pressure. Therefore, having a set schedule that dictates how you spend your time. It can boost your motivation to complete tasks on a timeline.
4. Take Breaks
When you get into a rhythm, you might worry that taking breaks will slow you down. However, the truth is you’re going to burn yourself out if you fail to plan for adequate down time.
Maybe you set breaks in your daily schedule to get up and stretch or get a snack. Perhaps you schedule in rest days during your fitness training regimen.
You need this time to recover so you can come back more energized and motivated than before.
5. Reward Yourself
I know what you’re thinking. Reaching your end goal will be a reward in and of itself. Though, this is hardly the stuff of long-term motivation.
You need to reward yourself for tiny victories along the way. Celebrating minor accomplishments may seem a bit gratuitous.
However, it is absolutely essential to maintaining your motivation. When you finish your business plan, choose a Netflix movie that you missed while you were working so hard.
When you get your first investor, treat your biggest supporter to a nice dinner to thank him/her. When you launch your business and make your first sale, throw a party.
When you have reason to celebrate, do so!
6. Understand Your Motivations
Why, exactly, have you set specific goals? You’re not building your own online enterprise simply to make money. You could do so much more easily at a traditional, 9-to-5 job.
You want to be your own boss, set your own hours, and do what you love. You want to know that your hard work will pay off in a direct way.
You want to be challenged and fulfilled by your work. Most of all, you want to make money.
When your motivation flags, you’re going to need something to fall back on, to remind you why you’re struggling so hard. Take some time.
Write down everything that’s driving you toward your goals. Thusly, you can refer back to your motivations and renew your sense of determination.
7. Get Inspired
No one has endless reserves of energy and creativity. Therefore, don’t think you can get through completely on your own. You’re going to need infusions of inspiration every so often to keep your motivation high.
This could come from your support network of family, friends, and peers. They are the ones who encourage you when you’re losing motivation.
Maybe you should get yourself a book of daily affirmations. Inspiration can come from all around.
Perhaps your plan and your schedule aren’t enough to get you off the couch and into your work. In that case, internal motivations and external inspiration will get you over the hump. What motivates you?
