There are a lot of things to love about quitting your typical day job. These include embracing the entrepreneurial spirit.

It also means thinking about going solo to start your own online business. You get to be your own boss, manage your time as you see fit. Plus, of course, reap the rewards of your hard work.

When you first start your venture, you’re probably riding a big wave of gusto. You’re learning new things. You’re motivated. Plus, you have a strong passion for your new pursuit. It’s a little bit like starting a love affair, until the honeymoon phase is over.

When your business takes off, you’re overworked. Often, the flames of passion you felt in the beginning have smoldered down to embers, or ashes?

What happens when you face seemingly insurmountable hurdles? They can leave you feeling discouraged or even depressed?

Business, like life, is full of ups and downs. Thus, as a self-employed, online entrepreneur, you’re going to feel the brunt of this. It will be in a way the average employee rarely does.

You should not push too hard. Do not shoulder too much. You’ll suffer sustained stress. Additionally, you could easily burn out and lose everything you’ve worked so hard for.

What you should know is that there are warning signs of impending burnout. You need to be aware of them. Thusly, you can take a step back, reassess, and avoid a complete meltdown.

Here are a few common signs of burnout to watch for when you make your living in the online arena.

Anxiety

Chronic stress and overworking yourself can result in all kinds of symptoms. One of the first you’ll probably notice is anxiety. This could exhibit in a number of ways.

However, it typically starts with a feeling of being overwhelmed. You feel like there’s too much for you to reasonably handle.

You might start to feel frightened that you’re going to make mistakes or that you’ll miss deadlines. You worry that nothing will turn out right.

That is despite your hard work and long hours. You might be plagued by self-doubt, dread, and other negative feelings. In some cases, these feelings can become crippling.

If you don’t address such concerns, you could suffer anxiety attacks or panic attacks. These make your heart race, give you shortness of breath, and feel certain that you’re going to die. You could even end up in the ER with these frightening episodes.

Anxiety is a fight-or-flight response. It’s a physical symptom of your mental stress. Experts have long known that stress has physical manifestations.

Do you feel that you’re suffering from anxiety? If so, you can take steps to reduce chronic stress. In turn, you’ll get back to leading a normal life and running your online business.

First of all, you need to know if anxiety is situational or the result of a chemical imbalance. You should speak with a professional psychiatrist for diagnosis.

Let’s say you’ve thrown yourself full-tilt into your work and suffered anxiety as a result. If you make a few tweaks, it could make all the difference.

What can you do to quiet anxiety? Start by setting a regular work schedule and sticking to it. No more burning the midnight oil. That might mean giving up some of your workload or taking a pay cut. However, it’s probably worth it to preserve your sanity.

Next, try to have some fun. Hang out with family and friends for a mood boost. This acts as a reminder of why you’re working so hard. You do so in order to enjoy your life! Try adding exercise to your routine. It’s a great anxiety-buster.

Are you feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, and anxious? If that is the case, you’re well on your way to burning out. Nip it in the bud. Restructure your schedule. Remember to make sure to take ample time for yourself.

Apathy

You used to pop out of bed each morning. You were raring to get started and bubbling over with creative juices. Now you can barely drag yourself from the sheets. You hit the snooze button half a dozen times.

You’ve started to feel ambivalent about your work. You feel exhausted all the time. Plus, more and more often, your five-minute breaks are turning into hour-long cat naps. You just don’t have any motivation to work. You’re quickly sliding toward depression.

These feelings of apathy are a sure sign of burnout. Maybe, your work isn’t stressing you out and causing anxiety. Instead, it could be taking over your life in other ways.

You know the saying about all work and no play. It makes you pretty dull. It can make you feel like life isn’t worth living.

As with anxiety, the solution is generally not to work more. Instead, it’s to work less. Remember that you have physical, emotional, and mental limits.

Let’s say you are working around the clock. Thusly, you’re going to push yourself too far. Your body will revolt. You’ll slow, and slow, and slow until you take a break and make some changes.

Again, start by taking a long look at how much time you’re spending on work. Then, revise your schedule to match a more typical work week.

This will leave time for socializing, exercising, and regular sleep patterns. These are all needed to reenergize you.

Avoidance

Have you recently found that you’ll do just about anything to avoid working? Do you spend your days procrastinating? Are you obsessively checking Facebook, or watching crappy reality TV.

Maybe you’re meeting friends for coffee, and even cleaning the toilets. Then, you’ll find yourself scrambling to get some work done at the eleventh hour?

Avoidance denotes a lack of motivation that is common when suffering burnout. This should seem strange to you if you love what you do. That is especially true if you’ve enjoyed success with your online venture.

You need to take a step back and reassess. As noted above, a more typical schedule is likely in order. Therefore, set regular work hours and try to stick to them. Limit yourself to a 40-hour work week. Though, make sure you’re actually working during that time.

Make some changes during your off hours, as well. In turn, you’ll have a clear delineation between work time and personal time. If this isn’t enough, it’s time to pause and reflect on why you chose this career path.

Remind yourself what you love about running your own online business. That can help to renew your motivation.

Make a sensible schedule that leaves you time to enjoy other pursuits and a social life. Thusly, you should be able to combat burnout and lead a balanced life.
