You’ve probably heard the phrase “nothing in life is free”. Yet, what exactly makes people spend $5 a week on lottery tickets? Are they really going to result in a return of $400 million? What happened to the concept of a fair day’s wages for a fair day’s work?
Somewhere along the line, it’s true, massive corporations replaced family businesses. Workers became mere cogs in the machine.
The bottom line became more important than employee well-being. Eventually, overworked employees began to get frustrated with the abuse. That’s when labor unions and labor laws took shape.
The pendulum swung to the point where workers demanded more for less. A constant battle has been waged ever since.
Each side tries to get the most from the other without giving anything up. Perhaps this has contributed to the idea that you actually deserve to get something for nothing.
